Day 6: St. George
Monday, March 18, 1996 We go through a major repacking and everything fits a bit better now. We still got too much stuff though, especially because yesterday evening we finally found a decent grocery store and had to stock up on Knorr soup, the Tomato & Basil kind, you know. Then we go Versateller hunting and afterwards we're on the road again. We travel up the Virgin River valley which is very pretty despite all the RV parks. They also build "dream houses" here. After a while the red and white cliffs of Zion come into view and the scenery shifts into a higher gear. Soon we reach Springdale, which is in a dramatic setting, framed by cliffs. Our first stop is at a new IMAX theater where they show a movie about Zion and such. Unfortunately it has a story of the Hollywood-Disney kind and the soundtrack is unbearable. There are a few nice landscape shots though and that's what I came for. Afterwards I get into an argument about it with Rebecca, but we soon make peace again and go on selecting a very nice spot in the Watchman campground.
Then we head for lunch to the Zion lodge and decide to climb Angel's Landing. It's easier than expected. Maybe we already start getting into shape again. The view from the top is exceptional as usual. By the time we get back to the car the shadows are already long and back at the camp we catch the last few minutes of warm sunlight. In Springdale we have a Thai Chicken Pizza in what looks like a former church, enjoy the sunset from the patio and browse through the adjacent bookstore. Time for bed.
