Day 14: Flagstaff
Tuesday, March 26, 1996 The sound of the passing trains is very familiar, they will eventually pass through Nipton, our first night's stop in the Mojave desert. We find a nice coffee house which looks like it hasn't changed since the good old days of Route 66. I don't know if they were good though, they are certainly old. Afterwards we head for the Museum of Northern Arizona, which has very nice ethnological and cultural exhibits about the native people who used to, and still do live on the Colorado Plateau. Then we're off to the art museum of the Northern Arizona University where there is an exhibition of clay sculptures by a local woman. From there we drive South to check out Sedona. Unfortunately this turns out to be an extremely touristy place. Everything is artificial and fake. The biggest joke however is the wide highway that cuts right through the center of town, without a single crosswalk for pedestrians. The surrounding scenery is pretty nice though and so we look for a motel. Especially since there is also a Chevron service station close by, where we want to bring in our car tomorrow morning.
