Day 20: Tucson

Monday, April 01, 1996
2722 miles
32° 11' 15" N / 110° 57' 55" W

In the morning we go shopping for some maps and books and also for a very nice pot from the Mata Ortiz village. Driving North out of Tucson, we decide that this city is definitively another example of these cancerous blobs, that have no core or heart and are allowed to eat out into the desert like there is no tomorrow.

We stop for bagels and after we have ordered about 10, find out that they are free, because it's their first day of business or a very good April fools joke. Afterwards we finally leave the city and retirement ghettos behind, the road straightens out and passes through a very arid and hot landscape.

In Florence we stop for ice and water and pretty soon we reach Lost Dutchman State Park at the foot of the Superstition Mountains. We get a very nice camp site, except it's a little bit sunny and so we go and get ice cream at the "ghost town" across the street.

As the moon rises over the cliffs, we go for a stroll and witness one of these incredible Arizona sunsets where you have Saguaros in the foreground and distant mountains on the horizon and stuff.

The cliffs behind us show an incredible variation in color and shape, and look quite mystical with an almost full moon right above them. The coyotes agree and start howling in the distance.
