Day 25: Albuquerque

Saturday, April 06, 1996
3405 miles
35° 06' 12" N / 106° 42' 26" W

We go back to the same little cafe to have breakfast. They serve some incredible blue corn waffles, and as we sit outside in the warm Spring sun and sip our cappucinos sweetened with almond vanilla scented sugar, we can't help but notice that life is good to us.

Afterwards we go shopping for fabric and film and money, which takes quite a while, since Albuquerque is essentially an unstructured assembly of shopping malls, gas stations and freeways. Along the way we also find a lesbian bookstore where we buy a cookbook and a photography book.

Then we are on the way North towards the much praised city of Santa Fe. The journey is uneventful and we arrive in the early afternoon. After cruising the plaza, we decide to check out the state park campground eight miles outside of town.

The road winds and climbs up into the mountains and when we finally reach the campground we're at almost 9000 feet. We stay anyway and set up the tent on one of the very few open sites. The altitude makes us dizzy, almost sick and so we hurry up and glide back down to lower grounds.

After we find parking, we walk around the streets of Santa Fe to get a first impression, which I can't remember right now because, I think, I was very hungry.

Then it's time for dinner. We go to the famous Coyote Cafe and are really very pleased with their offerings. The portions are really huge though and we almost don't make it back up into the mountains, where our tent awaits us in the dark forest.
