Day 26: Hyde Memorial State Park
Sunday, April 07, 1996 We awake first by the birds, greeting the sun, and then by all the people driving up the road to go skiing on Easter Sunday. So we get up an roll down the hill into town. It's a beautiful Spring morning which provides the perfect lazy Easter feeling. And lazy we are, after an excellent breakfast/lunch at Cafe Pasquale. We get our act together and mosey up Canyon Road where a lot of the galleries are. Most of them are closed, or to put it in another way, just enough of them are open to not get oversaturated. Back in town, we check out a few specific places and then we are hungry again, or at least we think we should be, and so we go to the La Fonda Inn and eat something. The restaurant is nicely set in an inside yard with a glass skylight and painted windows. The food is decent and so we happily crawl into our tent in the lonely forest above Santa Fe. Overall Santa Fe didn't impress us too much. There are some nice corners, especially for food, and it's easy to imagine that it must have had a lot of charm once. But now big tourism, gift shops and galleries prevail and create a Disney-like atmosphere. There is no life. |
