Day 37: Big Bend National Park (Rio Grande Village)

Thursday, April 18, 1996
5278 miles
29° 10' 55" N / 102° 57' 19" W

We get an early start as we want to go all the way to San Antonio today. After we leave the park, the landscape quickly gets boring again. We stop for Huevos Rancheros somewhere and not much else happens until we reach Del Rio, where they have one of these reservoirs so people can boat around or something.

The landscape starts getting pleasantly green around here and there are many flowers along the side of the road. Which creates a perfect setting for the event of the day: our good old car turning 200000 miles old! We stop and watch in awe as the 9s turn into 0s. It's funny how we experience feelings for random events like this one. If the odometer would measure kilometers instead of miles, it would read something like 320678 and it wouldn't be special at all. We celebrate anyway and happily drive on.

In Uvalde we stop at the local antique store and Rebecca starts looking for knives and forks. She finds some and as she pays, the old lady says that if she wants to get more, then we should visit her husband at their home. We follow her directions and indeed find her husband mowing the lawn nearby. He's happy to be interrupted from work and shows us around the house, which is filled to the roof with all sorts of old stuff. Rebecca also finds two spoons and he's so happy that she gets them for free. After some more chatting we say goodbye and drive on.

In San Antonio we check in at the Motel 6 and since we are pretty tired from driving so far, decide to just go out for a quick bite. So we start driving and driving and driving, and by the time we find what we want, we end up driving around the whole town only to end up where we started, right next to the motel. Oh well.
