Day 3: The High Sierra Experience

Previous day | Introduction | Next day

The day starts with breakfast at Jack's, that's where the real sportsmen go. In spite of better knowledge, Rebecca orders a banana cream pie. Nice try.

Then we make our way back North to Tom's Place and up Rock Creek. The road up the valley is like driving through a firestorm. The aspen on both sides of the road are glowing in the whole spectrum of red, yellow, orange and green.

At the Mosquito Flat trailhead we pack our lunch and start climbing towards Little Lakes Valley. Where the trail to Mono Pass branches off, we are reminded of a backpacking trip across that pass that we undertook in 95. Just this thought gives me a high altitude headache.

After passing a few lakes we decide to stop at Box Lake. Everyone gets lunch and then we slowly start to mosey back down the valley. Strolling along the beautiful shores of the lakes, creates an intense High Sierra feeling, and we long to return some day for a longer outing.

Our way leads us back across Tioga Pass to the West side of the Sierra, into Yosemite Valley, where we were able to get a reservation for a cabin.
